Fifteen to 30 minutes later an infantryman of the 1/3 Madras Regiment stationed at Gangavaram, 6 miles SW of Vizagapatam, saw FH291 returning and jettison its depth charges 3 miles off the coast. Almost immediately afterwards the Hudson dived straight into the sea. It was believed that an engine failure probably led to the jettisoning of the depth charges and that loss of control followed. |

Shortly after becoming airborne, a serious technical problem developed and the pilot tried to land at Watton. In the attempt the Stirling hit some trees and crashed 20:15 at Great Cressingham, 5 miles SSE of Swaffham. Six of the crew of seven were killed, amongst them were four New Zealanders.
