A member of the NFS prior to joining up. Employed Micklethwait & Co Ltd. Funeral service conducted at St Cuthberts church followed by interment at Moorgate Cemetery on Tuesday 17/10/44. Lived 15 Campbell Drive, Herringthorpe, Rotherham Son of Florence Moreman and stepson of George Edward Foulds, of Herringthorpe, Rotherham. Rotherham (Moorgate) Cemetery Vickers Wellington JA475 took off 14:20 from Market Harborough for a solo cross-country. Encountered a violent electrical storm (at the time the Wellington was flying twixt 4000 & 6000 ft) and crashed 14:45 just to the S of Guilsborough, 9 miles NW of Northampton. |

Avro Lancaster mk I ME449 coded PM-T was lost on a Gardening (mine-laying). Airborne at 17:43 12 Mar 45 from Elsham Wolds for mining
operations in the Kattegat (Silverthorne Region). Shot down by a night-fighter (Maj. Werner Husemann, 1./NJG3) and crashed 2145 at Lyne, 8 km S of Tarm on Jutland's west coast. Both Air Gunners are buried in a joint grave, which is located in a plantation some 2 km SE of the town and on the road to Oddum. S/L S. Slater Evd Sgt K. Foster Inj F/O H.A.S. Mitchell RAAF Evd P/O M.H. Bertie RAAF Evd W/O T. Fairclough Evd F/S H.J. Porter RAAF KIA Sgt D. Morris KIA The crew had a quiet outbound trip and laid their mines in the allotted area. It seems that the five No.103 Sqdn Lancasters engaged in this operation dropped their mines between 2055 and 2100. Returning over Jutland, ME449 was shot down, falling in the grounds of a farm at Ostergarde. Both air Gunners were found dead in the wreckage and the bodies were taken to the hospital in Tarm, from where they were collected by Germans and put into bags and taken to the plantation south of the town where a hole was dug and the bodies were thrown in together and without ceremony. As this dumping was performed the church bells began to chime. When the Germans protested they were informed that sunset was being called!. On 14 Jun 45 the grave was consecrated by a Danish priest. On Sunday 12 Aug 45 some 800 people participated in the official burial ceremony, which was ended by S/L Smart from Vandel airfield who saluted the two dead men. The remaining five crew men all reached Sweden.
