Edwin Easthope (1682614)
Leading Aircraftman - Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve - 10 SFTS 29 July 1943, aged 23 Birth reg'd in Rotherham in Q3 1920 Son of Edwin Theophilus and Ida Elizabeth Easthope, of Rotherham, Yorkshire, England Enlisted 7/41. Drafted to Canada 2/43. Educated Thornhill Council School & Kimberworth Central School. Employed Beatson Clark & Co Ltd. Member of both Masbro Independent Chapel - church roll number 3309, 4 years membership and Boys Brigade. Keen cyclist and motor cyclist. Lived at 86 Clough St, Rotherham Dauphin (Riverside) Cemetery Killed when Cessna Crane 7893 crashed shortly after take off on a night training flight from Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada. Easthope was about to carry out night flying sequences when the aircraft stalled right after take-off, crashing ¼ mile west of the runway (Dauphin) at 01:50 hours. The Accident Investigation Board suggested that there was a strong possibility the pupil failed to carry out a thorough cockpit check before taking off and actually did with his starboard gas cock in the off position. He was buried the following day. His flying hours are listed as: Instrument - 17 Night - 6 Solo on Type – 25 Dual on Type – 34 Total Solo - 66 Total Dual - 67 |
During WWII many locals were killed or wounded in action overseas. Closer to home, rural Manitoba also had its share of accidents and casualties at the various air training schools. Close to 50 airmen lost their lives while training at No. 7 and No. 10 near Dauphin. There were also crashes where the crew was lucky to survive. On a Wednesday night on July 29, 1943, at around 11 p. m., an RAF student from No. 10 SFTS, LAC Edwin Easthope, was killed when his Cessna Crane crashed near the main airport at Dauphin. Wim Aberson, a longtime local pilot, still vividly recalled the aftermath of the plane crash. It was family night at the theatre in Dauphin and the Aberson family were driving home from the movies. Wim and his brother Dick were with their parents, Bob and Jane. It was a cloudy night with a light drizzle. The family spotted a fire on Charlie Fisher’s farm. Their first thought was that a straw stack was on fire but they soon realized that harvesting had not yet started. A plane flew over and dropped a flare that lit up the whole field. Jane Aberson wanted the family to drive to the crash site as Wim’s older brother, Bob, was taking his training and she was afraid that he had crashed. When the family got to the crash scene, the crash and rescue team was coming at a high speed from the airport. The vehicles went through the ditch and the barbwire fence. The Abersons stayed quite far away from the gruesome crash site. Some officials came with lanterns and found a parachute in the field. In furrows made by the crashing airplane, there were pools of burning gasoline. Wim figured that when the pilot took off on the cloudy night and left runway 26, the night conditions made it very dark. As he left the runway and ascended several hundred feet he was facing a “ dark hole.” The experience of total darkness would have panicked the pilot, as he had no lights for reference. He would look over his right shoulder to locate the lights from Dauphin. “ As you turn your head to the right you turn your controls to the left. As he looked ahead he didn’t realize that he was in a turn. He would then go into a spiral in seconds.” Edwin Easthope is buried at the Riverside Cemetery. The June 23, 1944 headline of the Dauphin Herald indicated that P/O Bill Bates, son of Mr. And Mrs. C. D. Bates of Dauphin, was involved in a plane crash. Bates received his pilot’s wings at No. 15 SFTS, Charesholm, Alta., on Nov. 18, 1943. Bates was the pilot of an Anson training plane from No. 1 CNS Rivers, and was forced down on the raging waters of Lake Manitoba on the Friday morning of June 17. P/O Bates, along with four airmen, was on a night exercise from the Rivers Navigation School, when the engine trouble occurred at 1 a. m., 25 miles from land on the west side of Lake Manitoba near Langruth.

29/30 July 1943
The Battle of Hamburg continued with 777 aircraft - 340 Lancasters, 244 Halifaxes, 119 Stirlings, 70 Wellingtons, 4 Mosquitos being despatached. The marking for this raid was again all by H2S. The intention was to approach Hamburg from almost due north and bomb those northern and north-eastern districts which had so far not been bombed. The Pathfinders actually came in more than 2 miles too far to the east and marked an area just south of the devastated firestorm area. The Main Force bombing crept back about 4 miles, through the devastated area, but then produced very heavy bombing in the Wandsbek and Barmbek districts and parts of the Uhlenhorst and Winterhude districts. These were all residential areas. There was a widespread fire area - though no firestorm - which the exhausted Hamburg fire units could do little to check. 28 aircraft - 11 Halifaxes, 11 Lancasters, 4 Stirlings, 2 Wellingtons - lost, 3.6 per cent of the force. |

Bomber Command had dispatched 2,253 sorties in 4 raids and 10 American B-17 sorties had also been flown. 1,976 aircraft claimed to have bombed in the target area.
