Family moved to Maltby, Rotherham in 1921/22, but moved out of the area 1935/36 Lived at previously of 11 Clarence Place, Maltby Runnymede Memorial Died when Vickers Wellington mk 1C aircraft R1778 coded SR-G was lost on an operation to Hamburg, Germany. Airborne from Oakington at 10:00 but had engine problems whilst outbound and had to ditch in the North Sea 70 kilometres west of Esbjerg at approx. 20:00 hours. Two of the crew survived the ditching and were able to enter the aircrafts dinghy and spent 38 hours adrift. On 2 Dec at 10:00 hours they were observed by the Danish fishingboat E264 “Harmonie” of Esbjerg. Skipper Knud Jensen took them onboard and brought them to Esbjerg where the German Wehrmacht made them prisoners of war. |
